Software/Video board incompatibility

Hi. We just got a new 486DX from the Insight company, with a very nice 14"
monitor and STB Resolution VGA 1120 x 1024 video board. MS-DOS 5.0 is also
installed now.

Unfortunately, some software I was using before doesn't like it, namely the
PADS freeware. The display options on the PADS freeware that work slightly
are the IBM VGA and EGA settings, and they don't work at all well. Lines
are lost, moving objects leaves cruft behind on the screen, and text is
obscured by jaggedy lines. This is a circuit board design package: losing
lines makes this software useless. A few other settings work equally badly,
several settings freeze the machine when the programs are run, and several
just leave a blank screen.

The freeware works fine on an ATI board in a Compaq 386. The monitor works
fine, and I've even tried swapping the monitors (to no avail). The Compaq's
ATI board worked fine on the new monitor, so that's OK. The 486's Resolution
card produced cruft on the Compaq's monitor, so I think the problem is the
board.

I've also called PADS, and they say they're not interested in writing
drivers specifically for that video card. They and STB said the card is a
VESA card, which STB claims is a great thing and PADS claims is not. PADS's
software has worked fine with the IBM VGA settings on many machines for years
now, and if it doesn't, the video card is not 100% VGA compatible.

My question is whether there are appropriate settings for this board, in
software or the dip-switches, to get it to properly emulate a known
hardware, like the IBM VGA or EGA video boards (as the most common, standard
exmaple).

Please note: I am not a PC expert, I am a UNIX sys-admin with a new machine
to cope with. Assume I'm new to this and explain your ideas completely
completely, and I'm much more certain to understand what you're suggesting
and its consequences.
