I hate DOS-style backup programs, and would like be able to xfer onto real (read: UN*X) machines if I have to. I was able to make my Archive Viper 2150S (150MB QIC cartridge) and AHA 1522 work, and you should be able to also, following these steps: Call Adaptec, and get the latest version of the ASPI2DOS software (this is the only cost item, at least). I got mine with a package deal w/the 1522 from a friend, so I don't know how much it will cost. If you are not running SCSI disks, you can probably get away with just running the ASPI2DOS.SYS driver. I don't have SCSI disks, so I don't (use the /I switch). Send me E-mail if you need to. ftp into oak.oakland.edu and cd into /pub/msdos/dskutl (I'm not exactly sure about the last directory name). Get a series of files called ASPI*.ZIP. Unpack these, and in ASPIBIN.ZIP there are two files, CTCTRL.EXE and TAR.EXE (and a readme file). CTCTRL is a program like "mt", and TAR is obvious. It's GNU tar. Good luck! The only problem I've had from day one was I can't run it under WinWoes (which is OK, as I only use that to view dirty JPEG pix), and the QIC-II format is sllllooooow. At least with my drive, and a "b" set to 32 under TAR, I get full-speed streaming (with no backspaces). YMMV. -Kenny -- Kenneth R.
