Can you make a 1200 baud modem into a 2400?

I have an EMP 1200E baud modem that has been working fine but
would really like a 2400 baud modem. Since my warranty is up and I'm feeling
a little daring, I was wondering if there is some way to replace a chip or
somthing inside my 1200 modem to turn it into a 2400 modem without doing any
major rewiring or requiring an engineering degree.

Any comments are welcome (ie. Can it be done? If yes, is it worth it? risky?)

Thanks in Advance
Al
