Am I correct? Hi. I don't exactly remember what PS/2s you were upgrading, but if it was some 386DX based model (like 70 or 80), then you might consider the new Cyrix 486DLC chip. It seems that there are two double clocked versions of this chip, 16/32 MHz and 20/40MHz. The chips run externally at the same speed (16/20MHz) as the original processor, but are double-clocked internally (32/40MHz). This is all the info I've got on the 486DLC, but here's an email I've saved on this topic: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ All Cx486 chips are right now going to the OEM's. However the Cx486DLC 16/32 and 20/40 both double-clock version compatible with 16 and 20 MHz i386 (32 bit) systems will become available to end-users (YOU) in October '92 (maybe earlier). The US retail price will be $299 or less. Is this a "good" price compared to a 486SX-25 motherboard (feel free to comment)? A press-release gave the following CPU benchmarks (performed on a Compaq Desktop 386DX/16), measured before and after replacement. The last column gives the figures of a i486SX-25 system: Before After 486SX-25 Landmark Speed 2.0: 20 100 85 Norton SI: 10 40 35 The relative speed-up in the applications Excel 3.0 (Byte Magazine Benchmark) and Word for Windows is approx. 50% (speed-up factor 1.5). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you're upgrading a 286 PS/2 and don't need 486 speed, there's the Intel SnapIn 386, a 386SX-20 with 16K cache, street price around $340. Hope this helps, Teemu. -- Teemu Mottonen Dept. of Computer Science tmottone@kruuna.helsinki.fi Univ. of Helsinki, Finland tmottone@klaava.helsinki.fi
