I just got a copy of the 4th edition 960 Solutions book today and
discovered the xa/mm/mx versions of the 960. What are the software
differences between these chips and the original 960 mc (for which I
have documentation)?

GE knew there was lots of money to be made in the diagnostic medical
machine field since it was only a matter of time before people started
getting sick from the effects of all of GE's toxic and radioactive
waste dumping. I expect GE to get into the Mortuary business next.
