Sorry about this but I have very BASIC questions to ask. I am interested in buying a computer and everywhere I look there are ads for 386/486. I have a (crappy) Amiga and I am persuing to buy a 386/486. 1) What exactly is the difference between the 386 and 486? Does the 486 have 32-bits and the 386 have 16-bits? Someone told me that the 486's are faster, but I have seen a 386/33MHz and then I've seen a 486/20MHz. 2) What is the difference between an SX and a DX? I am assuming that DX's are "better" since they are more expensive. Someone mentioned that DX's have an FPU and SX's doesn't. What is an FPU? 3) What is the difference between AMD and Intel chips? 4) What does the math coprocessor do? Is it just for more speed? 5) What does a buffer cache do? I see that prices are much higher if you want a 64K (upgradeable to 256K usually) buffer cache. Is it important? Is it too just for more speed? 6) As for memory, I see SIMM, SIPP, and DRAM. Can someone explain the difference? If I buy I computer, I'll probably want 2MB internally and then upgrade to 4MB, but I don't know what these terms are. Please e-mail responses. Thanks. -- Brian T Odom
