You can run 80186 code on a 286, 386 or 486 running in real-mode - the 80186 instruction set is is essentially the sameas that of the 286 with the exception of the instructions that relate to protected mode (lmsw, smsw, lgdt, lidt etc ...) which are not implemented on the 80186. Any of the standard PC compilers will generate code that will run on a 186 - if you want to generate optimal code for the 186 you may have to lie to the compiler and ask it to generate 286 code if it doesn't have an explicit 186 option. (although I do seem to remember a bug in the 80186 multiply instruction which might make this unwise ...)
