How to find someone on the internet by name?

     I understand that it is possible to find someone's account 
name on the Internet using their real name. I realized I could 
use this facct to find a friend of mine from elementary school.
This assumes that he has an account somewhere on the Internet.
I think theis is likely. His father was a professor, and he was
a very bright guy. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he had an
account.
     So, how does one find a person's user account using just
their first and last name?
