PD Data Acquisition SW?

I am posting this for a friend without an account:

Is there any public domain/shareware mac software for data acquisition?
My friend is a former Apple II nut who used the paddle inputs to read analog
data from experiments. Now he would like to use the microphone on the
mac LC (or any other port for that matter) to input experiment data directly
into the mac without buying large amounts of additional hardware. Does such
a beast exist? Please respond by E-mail and I will forward the info. Thanks..
