It may be the fault of MacInTax's Geneva Font.

:Word 5.0a--the text in the Font Box and Style box becomes corrupted, and this 
:occurs regularly, without MacInTax.  MicroSoft suggested that the Settings
:file might have been corrupted, but I replaced it without solving the problem.

Susan, try trashing ALL of the geneva fonts in your system and then
installing a fresh set from the Apple system disks.
