I recently purchased Apple's Macintosh operating System, Version 7.1
from MacWarehouse. I was impressed with the speed that MacWarehouse
had in delivering, even with the fact that System 7.1 was a bit delayed
due to the holidays. Well, I got System 7.1 today, I unpacked it with
a greedy smile and a gladdened heart, now I could finally throw away
my antiquated System 6 from the System Folder. I noticed several goodies
which Apple gave me for my purchase. At Ease! Wow! and QuickTime to boot,
Cool! Now I could look at my QT copy of the Zapruder film! ;) ;) ;)
Then, to my horror, I noticed a small note Apple packed in. It read:
"If your computer does not have a 1.4 MB floppy drive..." (title)
"If your Macintosh is a Macintosh Plus, a Macintosh SE, or a Macintosh II
computer and you do not have a 1.4 megabyte (MB) floppy disk drive, you
will not be able to use the high density floppy disks included with this
7.1 Personal Upgrade Kit.
If you don't have a 1.4 MB floppy disk drive, you will see the following
message if you insert one of the high density floppy disks:
(the "This disk is unreadeable: Do you want to initialize it?" message)
* Click Eject to eject the disk.
To obtain a set of 800K floppy disks that you can use to upgrade your
computer to system software version 7.1, please call 1-800-769-2775."
I called the number. The representative on the other end stated that
I had to fax my receipt to them (716-873-0906) and that they would send
via normal shipping the set of low density disks. For 8 dollars more,
Check or Credit Card, I could get them sent overnight. Well, I paid
$79 already to get a much needed upgrade, now I have to wait two weeks
or send in 8 dollars more?
I think that Apple is mostly at fault for not providing the right disks
to start with. It's something I think will give Apple a bad PR reputation,
as well as customer service, especially for the majority of Macintosh
owners who don't have 1.4 MB floppy drives, i. e. Plus owners like me,
or everyone else. 1.4 MB floppy drives haven't been out long enough for
owners to start upgrading their systems. Also, I noticed on the "Required
equipment:" panel on the side of the box, the owner would need "An Apple
SuperDrive floppy disk drive", that's it. No explanations on what a
"SuperDrive" was or the size of the drive. Another big mistake on Apple's
part.
I also lay a bit of blame on MacWarehouse. I told them the Macintosh I was
upgrading, and none of them informed me about the special drive required.
But I lay a lot of blame on myself in the first place for buying a Plus
to start with, back at the time when the "Plus" was the "Quadra 950" of
the Macintosh line. There are times I feel I could take the Plus, fill it
to the brim with TNT, Dynamite or some other suitable explosive, go out
in the middle of a field and *SHA-BOOM*. Butr when you stop to think about
life, the day Motorola produces the 68060 Processor, as they have been
working on, skipping the 050, there will be MANY Quadra 700-950 owners
who will want to dispose of their Mac in a most violent method. ;) ;) ;)
I suppose the Subject of this post is wrong then. I haven't as yet tried
System 7.1, so I cannot judge the quality over any previous system. My
grudge is solely against Apple's poor judgement in providing the wrong
disks to many Mac users. I really feel like Apple has given many Mac
owners a brutal raping with a broom handle, and if this were the quality
of Apple's technical support and marketing, I would be less inclined to
purchase software from Apple.
I welcome any comments, queries, suggestions, especially from those of
you on the net from Apple.com. All flames will be automatically forwarded
to /dev/null.
....and so, his heart filled with rage and sadness, the disgruntled Macintosh
owner strides off the net, deciding between slashing his wrists or OD'ing.
