Hello. This is the summary of the responses I received regarding the
TeX -> RTF/ASCII conversion process. Quite a few people inqured about the
RTF -> TeX program, so I'll mention that too.

Thanks for all who replied, and I apologize for waiting so long, since
I needed to follow up on where to obtain the TeX to ASCII program.

---------

rtf-to-tex is the program that converts RTF to TeX format. There's another
utility that provides similar functionality, but the distribution notes
for rtf-to-tex mentioned that it's not as robust. It parses RTF
and generates a simple TeX file, which needs to be edited as necessary
to make it compile. At least most of the work is done for you.

It is availble from sumex-aim.stanford.edu,
as /info-mac/util/rtf-to-tex.hqx

and mac.archive.umich.edu as well.
----------

If all you want to do is strip out the TeX formatting escape codes, detex
is the easiest way to do it. Note that all it does is remove the Tex codes.
The file organization and formatting information created by LaTeX is not available.

detex can be found at various FTP sites. The one most people are aware
of is wuarchive.wustl.edu, in directory /usenet/comp.sources.misc/volume32.
as detex/part01.Z

It's C source, so the easiest way to use it is to run it on a Unix machine.

----------

The conversion of TeX -> ASCII can be done by generating the dvi output
file using the txt.sty style. The dvi file is then converted to ASCII
using dvi2tty. This assumes that you have access to a Unix machine
running LaTeX. With this method, you get all the headings and resolved
references, etc. The only thing missing is the character formatting, but
that's easy to deal with.

The programs can be obtained from sol.cs.bucknell.edu, in
/droms/txt-dist.tar

#Note: I have not personally done this conversion yet, since it requires
familiarity with TeX.
