I had a similar problem with my Hard Drive an Ultra Drive 45 from GCC Technologies. I was able to fix my problem. But I had to work from a System Bootable Disk and reinstall my System. In my case System 6.0.8. What happened. Well my System had been corrupted by WDEF. When it did this it caused problems with my ability to defrag my hard drive. That's how I spotted it in the first place. It's an extreme fix.
