Problem solved! It was not as horrendous as I had imagined. It was
defective media- the 800 k disks. (Why didn't anyone think of that??)
But I did, and made new disks, booted from the main disk and ran the
installer prog to install sys 6.0.8 on the HD, and the Mac now boots
happily from it! Whew! So the original system on the HD (whatever it
was) must have been corrupted somehow. The Mac seems to run faster too.
But two more questions.. what prog and version should I use to check the
hd for faults and errors? and.. can I format new 1.44 mb floppies to
800k format, to avoid using my old 800k disks and risk having this
problem again? Thanks, (sorry for my ignorance on these matters)
