You'll find that the Mac 'Command' key (usually located next to Space bar) is very similar to Windows 'Ctrl" key, having many of the same keyboard commands, see page: <http://internet.ggu.edu/university_library/keyboard.html> Assuming no windows open when Mac boots, notice on the desktop the HD icon is selected (a duller colour than the other icons). Hold the 'Command' key down and type 'O' (Open) to open the HD root directory. Next, type the first letter of a folder's name eg: 'A' this will select the first folder name beginning with 'A'. Once an icon is selected you can use the direction keys to navigate to subsequent icons. With an icon selected that you wish to open, hold both the 'Option' and 'Command' keys down and type 'O'. This has the effect of closing one window and opening another. Similarly, on the desktop with no folders open, type the 1st letter of an icon's name. This will select the 1st icon name beginning with the letter you just typed and not necessarily the one you wanted to select as this method chooses icons alphabetically, so 'Aarvark' will get selected before 'Ark'. However if you type 'AR' quickly, 'Ark' would get selected 1st. But in this case, selecting icons on the desktop is usually faster by using the arrow keys. The OP 'nospam' gave some other commands to play around with. Holding the 'Command' key down and clicking onto a window's title bar is a good one for navigating back through multiple directory levels. > Also if I do connect to the net.. should I > upgrade programs such as Internet Explorer, to the latest > versions, or is it best to leave it/them in the same relative era > as the hardware? I think Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express will run on Mac OS 8.1 You can use a more uptodate Mozilla only if you upgrade your current OS to OS 8.6 or 9.x - the upgrade from 8.1 to 8.6 or 9 was not free. This is the final Mozilla to run on pre-MacOS X (WamCom-Mozilla 1.3.1) <http://www.wamcom.org/latest-131/> -- dee
