if you have a DVD version, I believe that a bit of the VRAM is always 
reserved for the DVD player hardware. Allegedly the reason you can only 
get 16bit colour on the LCD with an external screen connected, despite 
the fact that 4mb is all thats needed for 24bit (theoretically 4mb for 
1024x768 on external and 4mb for LCD)

Could also be because the Lombard graphics card only has partial suport 
on OS X - IE no Open GL acceleration, which keynote uses.

In the same boat myself - dont know if ill ever go to OS X on my Lombard 
as I need Open GL.
