Changing font names with ResEdit

I've just tried to change some font names in RedEdit, like changing
"N Helvetica Narrow" to just "Helvetica Narrow" so that it appears after
"Helvetica" in the font menu in all applications.

However, after doing these changes (by getting Cmd-I "FOND Resource
Information" and changing the name and saving) I note that in the menus the
font now appears TWICE - ie with its old name *and* new name, in all
applications and Key Caps.

What's happened here?  It seems the font name is stored in more than one
place, and perhaps ResEdit changes only one of them.

Any suggestions?  Can this be fixed?

(Aplogies if this has appeared more than once.  It seemed to fail at this end
 twice).
