Commercial Software:

FWD Hard Disk Toolkit : Formatting hard drives, changing caching (if supported),
                        Partitioning

MacTools Pro : Defragmenting/Optimization of Hard Disk, File Repair,
                        Anti-Virus, Undelete, General utility

Now Utilities : Particularly NowMenu's which allows customization of
menu's and NowWYSIWYG which allows you to view fonts
in menu's as they will appear

Aladdin Desktop Tools : Particularly the background copying and trashing tools

Aladding Stuffit Deluxe : Compression software
           or
Norton Disk Doubler (I actually like DD because it doesn't create archives
and maintains names, however, Deluxe can handle more
                         formats alternative formats)

Netscape/Eudora Pro/Newswatcher : Web browser, e-mail package, and newsreader
(Netscape can also read news but I prefer Newswatcher)

MacLink Pro : For translating files between PC's and Mac's

I use loads of shareware/freeware in different combinations at different times.
I wouldn't say many are essential. A GIF viewing program is a good utility as
is ResEdit, a uudecoder/encoder is also good to have.
