Just a thought...

I think there is a Shareware printer extension called Print2Pict, use that
to print from Illustrator (or any other prog.) to a Pict file then use
Graphic Converter (another Shareware prog.) to convert it to GIF (or JPEG
or any other of those zillions format that GC supports).

(You  can use eDOC creator too, and use GC to open the PICT resource instead)
