MDS, AD & SS when they compress files do so in such a way that the icon on the desktop is still the same as when it was decompressed. Only DiskDoubler visually changes the icon. However, AD & SS actually change the type & creator of a compressed file, but "fool" the Mac into seeing the original info. No, depending on who you talk to, the fact that MDS does NOT change this information is a distinct MINUS! The reason that SpaceSaver (and I would assume AutoDoubler) changes the file's type & creator is to protect the user from working with files on non-MDS equipped machines. For example, if you take an MDS compressed MSWord file to a Mac w/o MDS - the file is still an MSWord file, but the data inside is NOT! This can lead to some VERY BAD situations. >> Unfortunately, More Disk Space Version 1.2 will not work >> properly on System7.1! There is an upgrade cost, but I do not know what it is. AutoDoubler 1.x is also incompatible with System 7.1 (in some ways), and a paid upgrade to 2.0 is required. Only StuffIt SpaceSaver does NOT require an update for 7.1 compatibilty - works right out the box (sounds like pretty good compatibility to me ;). -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leonard Rosenthol Internet: leonardr@netcom.com Director of Advanced Technology AppleLink: MACgician Aladdin Systems, Inc.
