I too have an update, which I feel is important.

It appears that many of the desktop file related problem I had reported the
other day (with regards to SS), were not caused by SS, as far as I can tell.
I removed all the desktop related files (I could have sworn I had done this
before!), and many of the problems went away (icons were restored, no more
"missing application" messages).

All in all, the behaviour was much more deterministic.

I still am having some problems with it, which Aladdin is aware of:
1) "Get Info" causes files to be uncompressed.
   Aladdin is considering a hack that would understand the finder's intentions
   and not uncompress the file (unlikely you will see this for a while). 
2) No easy way to accuratly determine how much space is being save by compressed
   files.
3) Files getting uncompressed when the desktop is rebuilt. It is likely you will
   see a patch for this before too like (I hope!).

Other problems I have reported:
1) DiskFit Pro uncompresses the files when backing up. 
2) Running a script did not "compress" files, it just stuffed them, resulting in
   0% space saving in SD 3.0
