There is yet another way to automate table and formula references. I use the link feature of word 5.x to make links to my formula number. Yes, I still have to re-number the formula's manually (and the could perhaps be done by one of the other methods) but all the references to that formula or table change automatically. I find this to be generally quite convienient and not much trouble at all. HOWEVER, there is one problem and one bug with the link feature. The bug is that if you select no format for the link the linked text will be in 12 point new york instead of the current style. This is a bug MS was aware of soon after releasing the product. Hopefully this will be fixed in 5.1. Secondly, if you move the file or change the folder it is in none of the links will work. Evidently, the full pathname of the source file is stored with each link (even if it is within the same file) and there is no way to globally change this. This is something I wrote them about, and hopefully they will impliment this - something like the change links feature in Excel.
