Disk Optimization troubles/questions

(Before I go into my story: I know that some people will say that disk
optimization is not worth it. Well, I want to try it anyway....)

Recently, a friend let me use his copy of Symantec Utilities for Macintosh.
I decided to run SUMTuneUp on my hard drive (after backing it up, of course).
I selected the options for "Defrag" & "Optimize", and let it go to work.
However, the defrag step refused to touch two files, namely the Desktop DB
and DF files, saying that they were open. Similarly, the optimize refused
to run, citing the presence of open files on the hard disk. (Oh yeah: Mac
SE, System 7.0.1.T)

I tried the following remedies, without success:
- Running "KillFinder" before the defrag/optimize: no effect
- Rebooting with Cmd-Opt-Shft-Del to ignore the hard drive, and then running
the SUMTuneUp: wouldn't see the drive. SUMDiskClinic could, but I couldn't
make it influence TuneUp.
- Doing the above, and then going back to the Finder and trying to launch
"SCSIProbe", a control panel that lets you rescan your SCSI bus: clicking
on "Mount" caused a Hyper-Bomb (i.e. the system begins to draw the outline
of the bomb box and then gets no further, and just flashes what it's got at
you until you hit the power switch).
- Renaming SUMTuneUp as "Finder" and restarting, both with and without the
COSD trick: nope, nope

So, does anyone have any idea how I can force SUMTuneUp to defrag/optimize
without flagging the DB/DF files as problems? Or, does another program
(commercial or otherwise) exist that will let me do what I want to do with
a minimum of trouble?

Thanks in advance,
