However, please remember that StuffIt Deluxe 3.0 is more than just SpaceSaver, there is a LOT more to the package. >I do not know how to get rid of it as when I removed it from the damned >system I could not access the files it had compressed. > As discussed in the manual, or explained by our tech support staff (had you called them with your problems), you can simply select your hard disk and choose "Expand" from the Magic Menu. _OR_ you could use StuffIt Deluxe, or UnStuff to expand compressed files. >It causes repeated crashes on a machine that never >creashed before. > What kinds of crashes?? Could you be a bit more specific as we are not aware of any specific crashes other than a few known INIT conflicts, most of which are resolvable with newer versions of some other software. >It DELAYS ALL program operations as even the smallest >resouirce that the running program needs is compressed and has to be >expandd. > If the program is already expanded, then it will NOT expand it again. If the program is opening another file to retrieve information, then it will expand the subsidiery file. >On top of that the big/small naming idea is STUPID. If you don't wish to tag individual files OR FOLDERS, you cdan always use "Idle-Time Compression" to simply let it compress older files, or use Magic Menu to compress the items you wish without ANY changes. >The program does not keep track of what files are being used or not >That would be a better approach to stuffing stuff, nt just file creation >date, as all daily use applications I have eg WP, 123, Photosdhop. etc >obviously have dates older than the date/"before" period qualifier in >SS. > Actually it uses the MODIFICATION DATE of the product. Yes, it would be nice to use the "access" date for a file, but since the Macintosh OS does not track that info (only creation & modification dates) and since creating such a file would take up (possible large amounts of) disk space - what the product is trying to save - that isn't possible right now. FYI: None of the other compression products track by access, they all track by mod dates. >In addition, the program is SO STUPID it cannot even recognize what files >it has already compressed. > It most certainly can...In fact it goes through MULTIPLE tests (when it needs to) to determine if a given file has already been compressed. >It causes Microphone to crash, Wordperfect to crash, and Compuserve Info >anager to crash - those are what I use daily - so I am not even sure what >else it causes problems with. > Again, we are not aware of ANY application incompatibilities, especially MicroPhone (I am using it right now to type this message - and I also helped author both MPII & SpaceSaver!). If you would like to contact our support department at (408) 761-6200 - ask for me directly if you wish - we'll be glad to help you sort out your pproblems. >I hate having SS come up after a crash asking you t remove the >files it created in a >stupid Temporary Items folder - for me the only temporary item is this >program itself - > That is a known bug in 1.0.1 of the product which is corrected in 1.0.2. >pity though that Stuffit 3 has soime very useful file >transaltions built in - I will opt for the straight upgrade to 3.0 > You will still get StuffIt SpaceSaver as part of your upgrade. If you don't like the product, remove it - no one if forcing you to use it. However, I think that with a simple call to tech support, you will be MUCH happier! -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leonard Rosenthol Internet: leonardr@netcom.com Director of Advanced Technology AppleLink: MACgician Aladdin Systems, Inc.
