Alt-WDEF or replacement thereof

Is there a utilty that does what Alt-WDEF used to do under System 6.0,
except under 7.0? or does it still work under System 7 (I didn't think
so)?

Basically, I would like to have the ability to iconize or hide windows
that are cluttering things. I want to do this PER window, not per
application. I like System 7's application hiding quite well. However,
to the best of my knowledge nothing of the sort exists for individual
windows.

Something along the line of the following would be great:
SGI's window iconizing-- somewhat like Alt-WDEF (more like Applicon's big
icons but at the window level except that they
do not appear when the windows are not iconized)
X-windows-- a palette of window names; when a window's entry is clicked
upon once, it is hidden; another click brings it back up
Both have something along the lines of Alt-WDEF's window-iconize box.

Alt-WDEF would be perfectly satisfactory if it worked (well) under System 7.0.

If such a utility does not exist, then it sounds like a great project for
some bored programmer out there.
