.sit files?

I have downloaded a few files from a public archive that were in
.hqx format. The files were converted into a .sit compressed format
after using binhex4 or 5 as required. Only one of the files gave
me the cute little stuffit_type icon, while the others don't....

I have both the latest (as far as I know) Stuffit and SitExpand
available to me and do not keep each on the hard disk at the same
time (as required). Following the instructions in SitExpand, only
one of the files was uncompressed correctly. You can guess which one.
When I double click on the others, they will not dearchive correctly.

I haven't had any problems Compact Pro or Stuffit archived files that were
downloaded.

Any ideas on this one? I'd appreciate any responses.

I have a IIsi running System 7. Thanks in advance.
