EXCEL: Can't access <filename> ?????

I get this error message;

   Can't access <filename> CONTINUE or cancel

when I try to open a particular excel worksheet. Could
someone tell me why I am getting this meesage and possibly
a way in which I could open this document or at least retrieve
the data in it,
