Looking for simple, fixed-width text editor

As a Mac programmer I lament the absence of a simple text editor, or
perhaps it should be called a TEXT editor in this case. It doesn't
have to be vi or Emacs; in fact I like the general Mac-style editor
interface. TeachText is almost good enough, except for two problems:

o It doesn't use Monaco or some other fixed-width font.
o It has no Find/Replace dialog.

What I do in practice is use Tex's or Think C's editor. Unfortunately
both of these editors come with some amount of extra baggage to handle
text and code compilation, respectively, and they make files with their
own funny icons. Also, I was thinking of trying to hack TeachText to
use Monaco, but its use of Geneva seems to be hard-wired.

Does anyone know of a simple, convenient, free, conforming editor for
the Mac?

Please send a copy of your reply by mail. Thanks.
