I would strongly urge you to take a look at the excellent (and free)
program, BBEdit, by Rich Siegel. The current version is 2.2. While it is an
editor, it has a wide variety of preferences, one of which includes the
ability to open files read-only. You can override this, but not by
accidentally typing a character.

The BBEdit search includes regexp. The program is very fast, and can
operate on large files (limited only by the amount of RAM you wish to
assign to the application). You can configure a wide variety of options,
select fonts and styles, and hav it remember and respect the "state"
information added to files by various editors such as MPW and Think C. If
you are an MPW user, BBEdit is toolserver-savvy.

All in all, an excellent program with excellent support.
