I posted a request for a good shareware painting program for the Mac.
I am an engineer who is applying for Masters in Architecture programs.
I had a PICT file that needed minor modifications and laser printing in
order to be included in my application portfolio. (It was a scanned
self portrait to be used as the last page.)
I needed grayscale capability and went with IMAGE 1.47 (freeware). It
did all I needed and was a pretty slick program to boot. [Lightning
Paint was the only other one I tried. It didn't do grayscale, but I
bought it anyway. I liked it, and at $14 ($7 for students) I couldn't
pass it up.]
Attached is a summary of all (sorry if I forgot someone) who replied to
me by mail directly, and the programs that they suggested. There were
also replies already posted to this group which I didn't include.
(Comments/endorsements in the summary below belong to authors of the
original replies.)
Thanks again.

B/W:
===
Lightning Paint.
-fairly full-featured shareware paint app. It has
all the basic functions, and is available at 36.44.0.6 (Sumex)
in /info-mac/app/ The only limitation is that it only supports B/W
Color:
=====
NIH Image (aka Image) (FREE and good!)
You can FTP for it from zippy.nimh.nih.gov. It is a very
sophisticated image enhancing/analysis program. Free, 'cause our
tax money paid for it. It is also available from sumex-aim, as well
as the online services. Current version is 1.47.
Imagic
Colour Paint
Inexpensive commerical packages:
===============================
Color MacCheese and Expert ColorPaint. Both are GREAT packages with
tons of features, and cost around $30 each.
MacBillboard ($35, CE Software, latest version is commercial, I think)
comes to mind. It is basically an enhanced MacPaint 1.5, & read/writes
MacPaint files.
MISC:
====
appledraw
If you need to open a PICT file (ie MacDraw) you might try MacDraw Demo
Version from Apple's Software Sampler, circa 1985.
I've used the Hypercard paint tools for quickie jobs.
