Thanks for the answers on MacTCP. I am now eddycated.

The end-all of info on MacTCP is Eric Behr's info file on MacTCP and related
software, available from his home machine spider.math.ilstu.edu as
/pub/mac/mac-tcp.txt
or from (I assume it's sumex, the directory looks like it, tho it didn't say)
/info-mac/reports/mac-tcp-info.txt

and thanks to Jaap Romers and whoever was the other fellow (Eric Behr himself?)
who sent me this whole text file.
