Here's a hint, although I don't have all the pieces. A friend
of mine can copy virtually all protected music (and other)
software by using Alsoft's "MultiDisk" partitioning utility.
In essence, you install the software onto a small disk partition,
then copy the whole partition. Since everything is in one
place, the copy protection code is happy, and you can copy the
partition onto other backup media, using Compact Pro or Disk
Doubler. There is a trick to it, though. What you actually
copy is the numbered Multidisk partition file (i.e. 0000012),
not the whole partition as a disk icon or opened disk. I
haven't quite figured out how to execute the whole process,
but I know that it can be done. I'd be interested to know
if anyone has done something similar.
P.S. MultiDisk is a great utility; you can password-protect
partitions, make them auto- or manual-mounting etc. I put
all my data files into a partition which mounts at boot time
if you supply the password within one minute. Without the
password, nobody even knows your data exists. (Great for
PowerBooks.) You can drag the partition to the trash at any
time if you want to let someone else use your computer; you
just remount it later. Within limits, the partition size
is expandable too, so you don't have to erase and create
partitions as your data expands. Check it out!
