Thanks to all who have offered solutions to my problem deinstalling Suitcase.
I have, however, managed to fix the problem. The key was in remembering that
I had used Font/Sound Valet on my Palatino suitcase a long time ago to save
disk space. When I removed Suitcase from the Extensions folder, I dropped
my "packed" Palatino suitcase into the System Folder. I did this because I
wanted to keep using Palatino in my Finder Views. Of course, without Suitcase,
the System has no way of using a "packed" suitcase, so when it tried to put
the names of the desktop items on screen as it was starting up, it crashed.

Well, I always knew when I was packing those suitcases with Font/Sound Valet
that I would forget and something terrible would happen! C'est la vie...
