: the Word5.0a upgrade available by a patcher from any mac archive (e.g. sumex)

Ahh, but this will help:  Under system 7, if you move the word program out of
the Word Commands folder onto the desktop it really moves the file.  Word 
looks for the tools in the folder that the Word program is in.

The fix:  Put Word back into the Word Commands folder, make an alias, and put
the alias on the desktop.
