I am trying to set up a video cnferece with my Son, I have iChat on a
G4 running 10.4, he has AOL messenger on a PC laptop running XP.

We have followed all the instructions on the "Using AIM on Windows" FAQ
page, and iChat seems pretty simple, and we have both turned off our
respective firewalls, mine being Mac OSX and Wireless G router, but the
invite to Video Chat menu items are dimmed.

Any suggestions appreciated, and if any more info is required please ask.

Thanks
Michael

OK, potentially really silly question, but you didn't say so
explicitly, but here goes -- do you both have webcams attached, and
are they recognized their respective computers.

You need to turn on iSight while your son needs to turn on his USB
webcam. Further, he should use the latest AIM client software (v4.9).

I have a question about the iSight camera. Can it be used as a webcam
with other applications such as yahoo messenger, or is it only for
iChat?

It works with most things.

Thanks to all replies, Jeff, yes and yes.
Michael, we tried iVisit, and yes, it works, but the interface is
pretty awful, so we would really like to get iChat/AIM working.
We have got to the stage were we can invite each other for a video
chat, but after trying to connect for a minute or two my Mac says I am
not responding and my Sons PC says that it is unable to complete the
connection.
All firewalls etc that we can think of are disabled.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks
Michael

Just out of curiousity, what is your ADSL speed? iChat AV 1-to-1 Video
Conference system requirement is 100Kbps Internet connection (up/down).
If either of you are on a 256/64kbps ADSL, it would not work.

The UI might not look as sexy as iChat sure - but the point is it
actually *works* and delivers what it promises ;)
