Word 98 problem

Problem: Word 98 seems to do some "weird" things, like leaving all Finder
menus disabled after it quits. In other words I can't access any of the
menu commands after quitting out of Word 98, though keyboard commands
still work. Any solutions out there?
Note: this doesn't seem to happen with my desktop Mac (PM7600/132, also
with OS 8.1)

Same problem for me, not only from Work but also Powerpoint 98. Happens on
occasion, disk tools usually shows no BTree errors and after a deskto
rebuild everything is fine for a week or so. Any MS gurus out there that
care to comment?

i solved this problem by never upgrading past word 5.0... it does
everything i need. (Sorry thats probably not much help but i hate all
these word upgrades all the time.. why fix something that does the job).

I had a similar problem using Word 98 (French) with MacOS 8.1, the
Finder crashed as soon as I clicked in the menu bar after quitting
Word 98.

The problem turned out to be a conflict with a Fax Extension which
modified the File Print... menu to File Fax... Apparently the way
it modified the menus was incompatible with the way Office 98 handles
the menus. Try resarting your machine with only the MacOS 8.1
extensions and those necessary for running word (they all have names
starting with MS or Microsoft). If the problem disappears then look
for an extension which in some way tries to modify the menu bar.

Good Luck

Have you tried Quitting the Finder (which will then rebuild) after using
Word 98?

It's probably a problem with your Microsoft OLE extensions in your System
Folder.

Word 98 installs new ones when you install the program, but you may have other
programs on your computer that have installed older ones, and W98 chokes on
them.

Solution:
Do a clean System Folder Install, then the first thing you do is install W98,
this will put the right OLE extensions in your system folder. Other than move
all your preferences over(a pain, I know) this is all that you should really
need to do.

What goes on in the background:
Your other apps that use OLE should run fine, and if they replace the new OLE
with old ones, then the next time W98 runs, it should self-repair and put the
right ones in automatically anyway.

Followup: Folowing ANthony Lester's suggestion I disabled the Apple
Telecom Software Fax extensions and the problem seems to have gone away.

I would suggest checking in with www.macfixit.com. I don't have Word 98,
but macfixit is the de facto site for troubleshooting.

Good luck
