Any WakeOnLan users out there?

When I use WakeOnLan to scan our household Airport LAN, which includes two daisy-chained Airport base stations, 2 or 3 networked printers, and 4 to 6 periodically varying users, some of them with multiple devices, I typically see from 12 to 15 or more devices, 3 or 4 of them with only a question mark for a name. If I track down the identify of one of these devices by re-scanning with it turned on and off or by finding out its MAC address, and type a name for it into the Name field, does this name "stick" through multiple future WakeOnLan scans -- even if that device is off the air for a number of those scans, then comes back online? Is there a difference between just clicking the Name field and typing in a new name, and using the "Add" or "Edit" menu commands? What happens if the device later acquires an internal name different from what I've typed into the name field? Does WakeOnLan keep a permanent cache of all the MAC addresses it's ever seen, such that it can identify a device that's been off line for a long time and then comes back onto the LAN? Can that cache be edited? And finally, can an iTouch be given a name (i.e., have a name entered into one of its internal settings) so that it will deliver this name to WakeOnLan in the same way that a Mac computer does? [None of these queries are of great importance; we're just trying to keep an eye now and then on who and what is using our LAN. Is there perchance a better -- but still simple -- tool for doing this?

I'm doing this from a MacBook laptop. [And just for the record, I'm only after seeing who's connected to our LAN, and maybe getting some idea of how much traffic they're generating, though that's not a major priority. The "waking" capability is not something I need.]
