Problems with internal to external file transfer

Please help,

I have an Umax Pulsar, an external HD (Quantum Fireball 4 GB with
Silverlining driver) and an internal 2 GB IBM HD. When I try to copy a
normal file (not a very small one) from the internal drive to the external,
my operating system (OS 8.0) breaks down. The other direction - from
external to internal drive - is ok. CD-ROM to external harddisc works also.

What could I do to avoid this problem?

I'd appreciate all advices.

Thanks in advance, Felix
