I have a few questions on using 4th Dimension; I'm using 2.1.1. 1) Double clicking in an empty region of an included file brings up a programmer-definable input layout for entering a new record. This is a useful interface property. Unfortunately, 4D stays in an infinite record input loop until the user selects "Cancel". I have found that users are confused by this, particularly since they get no acknowledgment that their record was entered (except that the fields in the layout are cleared). I want the program to return to the original layout in response to either a save or a cancel (i.e., add only one record in the included file). Is there any way to do this? 2) I understand that the scripting language does not include message passing capabilities (such as Hypercard objects have). Nevertheless, I have encountered several cases where it would be useful to execute object scripts from procedures. Can this be done? 3) I would like to integrate bar code printing and reading into a 4D database used for inventory and shipping control. Does anyone have experience with bar codes and 4D? Since the data is for internal use only, no special codes (e.g., UPC) are required. I presume I just need to add a font in order to do the printing part. Are there any freeware bar code fonts? The input side might be a little tougher. Can a bar code device (presumably attached via the ADB) be easily interfaced with 4D? Can anyone recommend a particular vendor? 4) Has anyone used the 4D front end available from Natural Intelligence? I think it got pretty good reviews in one of the popular trades, but some independent verification would be reassuring. Thanks. Mark Fitzsimmons
