We have several large-scale 4D databases in operation. They required
extensive tuning to minimize network traffic, and run quite well
with 25 users logged into the database, and at least five simultaneously
doing heads-down data entry. Our server is a Quadra 700 with high-speed
Fujitsu drives; we are running a 10BASE-T ethernet network. Clients range
from Mac II to IIci. Our tests with the 4D Server show that our
databases running under 4D Server perform as well as a Sybase server running
on an HP9000, with a 4D client connected via 4D SQL/Server over TCP/IP.

One of our datafiles has over 1,000,000 records, yet indexed lookups
take about a second over the ethernet network.

The development of this kind of system requires the services of a professional
4D developer, a person who has proven experience implementing successful
multi-user databases, and a solid grounding in the theory of operation
of relational database management systems.
