4th Dimension Multiusermode Problems

I'm a relatively new user of 4th Dimension, and I've run into a problem
for which I am
looking for guidance. I've developed an application in 4D which works
fine. However,
when I try to run the application in multi-user mode over the network,
the performance
is completely unacceptable. The problem is particularly noticable when a
list of
records is being displayed using an output layout. It can take up to a
few seconds to
display each record in the list. With a list of 50 records, this takes a
long time. The
problem is even worse, in that if there is a list of records being
displayed in one
window, and then I open and close a window on top of the 4D window, the
whole
update process is performed tying up the machine for a couple of minutes.
Thus
even if a user has a 4D window open but isn't using 4D, the machine can
simply
hang for a couple of minutes after the user moves some windows around.

My question is whether my problem is inherent to 4D or whether I've done
something
silly (by 4D's definition) and tuning my program will solve the problem.
If tuning my
program is the answer, any suggestions as to what I should look for?

Also, I was wondering if anyone has any detailed information on 4D
version 3 and
the new 4D Server. Does the server significantly improve performance in
multiuser
mode?

A few other miscellaneous questions:
-While running 4D, can I get a list of all registered users of the
system?
-Can I have multiple 4D applications open at one time?
-Every user on the network keeps his/her 4D structure file on their
local machine.
This is recommended in the manual to improve performance. The user's
password
is maintained with their local structure file. This makes
distributing new versions of
the structure file a pain as everybody's passwords end up being
changed back to
some default value. Any suggestions as to how to handle this problem?

Thanks for any help.
