khj@cs.appstate.edu (Kenneth H. Jacker) asks for a review of FileMaker PRO
2.0. I just upgraded last week so here are some brief first impressions:

-- it seems a bit faster and more responsive when fiddling with layouts,
but I haven't tried it on anything elaborate.

-- there is good support for AppleEvents, including some sample scripts
that let FileMaker pass data from a database to Resolve or Excel (scripts
for both spreadsheets are provided). You can also drive FileMaker from
an AppleEvent script.

-- the scripting language was completely redone. You can treat scripts as
a pseudo-programming language. (However, you "write" scripts by clicking
on menu and widget items: you don't really "type" scripts as you would
Hypercard.)

-- the dialog that defines expressions hasn't changed, but the expression
window got larger.

-- FMPro now supports half of the edition manager (I don't remember whether
it's publish or subscribe, but I'm pretty sure it's subscribe.)

-- There are lots of new sample scripts, including an incredible (consise,
yet detailed) introduction to AppleEvents and the Object Model. That, in
itself, is worth the price of admission.

-- No trouble converting my old databases, but you can't convert back.

The upgrade was, as I recall, $89. plus tax and shipping.

Hope this helps.
