Is it possible to execute shell (unix or VMS) scripts via DAL? In commercial systems, an SQL only API doesn't have all the expressive power you need for client/server systems. Many vendors who offer SQL-only APIs don't seem to realize this. For example, sometimes you want the server to do something mindless like spawn/fork a long DBMS operation, print a file, provoke a backup, read a server-based config file, search for a file/database, etc, etc. You could express the shell output as a SQL descriptor (Sybase Open Client/Server's shell RPC pops to mind) so long as the result of the shell command procedure is well defined... marc kenig Ross Systems, Inc.
