The easiest and best way for a non-programmer to understand and learn to
write Apple Events is with a program called UserLand's Frontier. They
have created a wonderful scripting environment that can control all the
programs on your mac that understand apple events. You can see the
way they are sent and received, and what information is needed when you
want to send them. They also have high level commands (glue) that call
the actual AE for a number of AE aware programs including Excel, PageMaker,
Microphone, FileMaker, Navigator, Hypercard, On Location, Stuffit Deluxe,
Claris Resolve, Claris MacProject, etc, etc.
On compuserve they have a very active area of people who do scripting
and can give you a hand. Everything the program does is with AppleEvents,
and none of the code is hidden. If you are curious about how anyone's
glue and scripts work just take a peek.
