Agenda for April 14th, 7:00 PM
3rd Party 4D Editing Tools: QuickCode Pro 2.0 and SanityCheck
-------------------------------------------------------------
Natural Intelligence of Cambridge, MA will give a sneak preview of its
latest version of QuickCode Pro 2.0, the great editing tool for 4th
Dimension procedures. It has everything that's missing from the
procedure editor and then some! We'll also raffle off an NI T-shirt
and mug!

We'll also be showing off another tool recently released called
SanityCheck which looks through all your structure and, like a grammar
checker, lets you know of any problems with your code, or orphaned
objects on layouts, etc. There will be a raffle of a full working
copy of SanityCheck, and meeting attendees will be given a 20%
discount off the price of the product if they order that evening, so
be sure to attend! No rain checks!

March Meeting Highlights
------------------------
Saloni Sarin and Dan Beckett were going to show off a 3-headed back-up
strategy using the newly released version of 4D Backup, but they got
much the same point across with the single user version. Questions
about pricing aside, we found 4D Backup, the tool, to be a really
important piece in the database equation for ACI and was, until this
past month, very much MIA. The fact that it also comes with a language
extension to 4D makes it very attractive.

4D Insider v. 2 is finally here as well, and it too was an overdue
necessity for many of us needing the features of Mover. It turns out
that they seem to have gotten it really right this time in terms of
much needed intelligence about the state of objects in the database to
which you are copying, and prompting you to confirm you really do want
to move in a layout that doesn't contain all the referenced
procedures, etc.

We also heard about ACI's grande strategie with respect to platform
independence by the fall and beyond... Briefly, those applications and
modules written in C++ will be the first to "migrate," i.e. Compiler,
4D Write/Calc.

Ship dates for Power Mac versions of product are easier to meet:
* This Month   4D Write/Calc
* Spring 94    4D Server
* Summer 94    4D First and 4th Dimension
* Fall 94      4D Client

The External Kit v. 2 still has no ship date, but ACI will provide
developers with guidelines for converting their externals to run on
the Power Mac some time before the fall. In the meantime, externals
are downloaded to 680x0 machines (or Power Mac in emulation mode)
running Client so there's no apparent problems. Externals written for
Mac 680x0 machines will force the Power Mac to run in "mixed-mode,"
switching back and forth between native and 680x0 code.
