Unix solutions for 4D?
#361

I'm looking for options to interact with 4D databases from unix machines.
I've heard that the new 4D externals kit will include C libraries for
extracting information from v.3.0/Server databases. What will be/is
involved in building such programs for unix and X? Are there widget sets
available for this? What sort of information is passed, and how is this
handled on the 4D side of the connection?

I'm not only interested in version 3.0 solutions, but also in those that
may have been developed for version 2.x.x.

Thanks,

-Charles

Charles,
I think you are refering to the 3.0 API which will let you get to a 4D server
and extract data as well as update it. Its important to understand that the new
4D server relies on ADSP to sent data accross the network. This means that any
application written with the API to access the server will have to be running
on a machine that is ADSP capable. I think Farallon is working on ADSP for
Windows and until that is available you won't be able to get at the server
using the API. I'm not sure if there is an ADSP implementation for unix boxes.
Hope this helps.

Peter
