A while back, I read (and got emailed) a bit on information regarding
Omnis 7's DAL capabilities. Someone here claimed that OMNIS 7 only supported
primitive SQL SELECT statements and was thus not the 'do-it-all' front
end that Bylth may have been claiming.
There is now "omnis 7 plus" (is it shipping?). I'd like to know if has
better DAL capabilities.

I don't know about that, but I did see a demo of the DAL package
that 4D has, and it has very good DAL capabilities as well as lots of
SQL support, from what I could tell. It also worked flawlessley with the
DAL Server available from Apple.
