Is FileMaker Pro multi-user?

Can several users access a FileMaker Pro database concurrently (with proper record locking that is)? If so, does it require a dedicated server? Also, while I'm at it, a) is there a way to import data via terminal emula- tion or will I need a separate program such as MicroPhone, and b) can I write the equivalent of XCMDs for it like I can for FoxBase? Thanks for your help. .../dave Dave Charlesworth

Yes FM Pro is multi-user, no it does not require a dedicated server,
nor does it require Appleshare or System seven filesharing. However,
since it is shared-file you are limited by the speed of the host Mac,
and anytime you have more than 4 people working at once, you will slow
down extremely.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Importing data into FM Pro can be
done only with a data file on an accessible drive. This data can be in a
number of formats, but it still requires a file to read from. You can't
write XCMDs for FM Pro, but if you have version 2.0 you can use Apple
events to basically perform the importing if you wanted.

My questions about importing data and XCMDs stem from my need to automate an updating process where the Mac would sign on to a mainframe overnight and download a "delta" file of data. In FoxBase I can do things that aren't built in to the database by writing XFCNs or XCMDs, and calling them from the code. It helps keep everything in a nice neat package (FoxBase has other things to balance that, of course). Thanks for your help.
