With the G3 Macs out, some have questioned the power of the former
8600/9600 line from Apple, but a close examination reveals some real
weaknesses in that reasoning. The 8600, for example, has two SCSI buses
with the internal being a Fast SCSI II bus which doubles throughput versus
the internal IDE bus in the new G3s. Also, the new G3 boards have only 3
(that's right - THREE) DIMM slots and require expensive SDRAM modules
versus the 8 DRAM slots on the 8600. Check out the spec sheets at
http://www.apple.com/powermac/8600/PowerMacintosh8600.pdf and
http://www.apple.com/powermac/g3/PowerMacintoshG3.pdf. Depending upon the
type of Mac user you are, you may want to choose this 8600.
