herrera@canaima.ME.Berkeley.EDU (Ramon F Herrera) writes: ] ] I am helping a friend to connect his Mac to the Internet. ] ] The way I envision it is like this: ] ] (1) a laser printer connected to the printer port ] (2) analog 28.8 faxmodem connected to the modem port ] (3) digital (ISDN) modem connected to the Geo port ] ] The first problem is: I don't know if that machine has a Geoport. ] How does the Geoport look like? There is some confusion as to what a GeoPort is. Some people like to call GeoPods (which plug into GeoPorts) GeoPorts, but this causes only _most_ (as opposed to 'all') of the confusion. A GeoPort look just like regular 8-pin Mac serial port, but there is an additional 9th pin squeezed between two of the pins on the middle row. However (and this is important) even if it looks like a GeoPort it might not be one. Some recent macs have 9-pin serial ports that look like GeoPorts but they are not GeoPorts. ] Is it like a third serial port ] that can achieve faster speeds? No, it is one (or sometimes both) of the existing serial ports. ] Now, suppose the geoport solution is not applicable. Can I get ] some kind of device that will allow me to have a 3rd. serial ] port (for the digital modem)? What kind of speed would this ] device be able to achieve? Yes, but they are very expensive. There are NuBus boards with 2 or 4 serial ports, or external SCSI devices with 2 or 4 serial ports. brian -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _______ _____ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brian A.
